Lucknow:

Some “personal matter” may have been the reason behind the killing of National Investigation Agency (NIA) officer Tanzil Ahmed, according to Uttar Pradesh police which today claimed to have zeroed in on certain links and hoped to crack the case at the earliest.

“Data of his mobile phone, which was damaged in firing, has been recovered,” IG (Economic Offence Wing) Deepak Ratan told reporters here.

“We are gradually zeroing in on certain links, especially some personal matters and are assessing forensic evidences.  There are certain things which are indicating towards a personal matter,” ADG (Law and Order) Daljeet Singh Chaudhary said, adding “We are hopeful to work out the case at the earliest.”

On being asked about terror angle, the ADG said, “We are taking terror angle in full cognizance and a senior level ATS team with the help of other agencies are working. But as of now, it indicates personal matter, which is being probed extensively.”

He said, “There were several matters, including professional and personal for which different teams have been constituted and are investigating them.”

Chaudhary had said yesterday that the two unidentified persons, seen in a video footage, were not suspects in the murder.

Ratan said six teams were working on the case and senior officers including ADG (Law and Order), IG ATS, IG STF and DIG Moradabad were camping at Moradabad, the police zone under which Bijnor falls. Ahmed was killed by unidentified bike-borne gunmen on Saturday night.

“Police is investigating all aspects, including personal and professional angles,” Ratan said, adding that the priority was to work out the case at the earliest and arrest the accused.

“We are working on all possible lines and we will share information with media after reaching any logical conclusion,” he said.
