Vikas Krishan Yadav, 24, is India's hope for medal at Rio Olympics 2016

New Delhi:

Twenty-four years old Vikas Krishan Yadav is a middleweight boxing champion from Hisar, Haryana. A contender in Rio Olympics 2016, Yadav has made it to pre-quarterfinals by defeating Charles Conwell of the US in the men’ Middleweight (75kg) category at the Riocentrio Pavilion.

Yadav tasted fame early in his career. Six years ago, when he was still a teenager, Yadav hogged limelight for his first international medal – a gold at the 2010 Asian Youth Boxing Championships.

Since then, he never looked back and won medals at 2012 Youth Olympics, 2010 Youth World Amateur Boxing Championships, 2010 Asian Games, 2011 World Amateur Boxing Championships.

But his winning streak did not continue in 2012 Olympics, where he crashed out in the preliminary round. Like most Indian boxers, the London horror didn’t affect his spirits as he returned to winning ways with medals at 2014 Asian Games, 2015 Asian Boxing Championships.

The pugilist is currently ranked sixth in his weight category. Vikas will now face Onder Sipal of Turkey in the pre-quarterfinals.
