Dhanteras 2019: This year’s Diwali celebrations, like every year, will commence with Dhanteras, Dhantrayodashi or Dhanvantri Jayanti, the birth anniversary of the God of Ayurveda. It falls on the thirteenth lunar day of Karthik Krishna Paksha in the Kartik month. According to the legends, on this day, goddess Lakshmi came out of samudra manthan. Devotees worship goddess Lakshmi and Lord Kubera, the god of wealth and celebrate the festival by buying something made of metal like jewellery, coins of gold or silver or household items made of iron, copper or brass. The sale of gold and jewellery skyrockets on Dhanteras every year. Precious metal is often believed to be a symbol of Dhanteras.
