Prices of 'Amul' milk will go up by Rs 2 per litre in Gujarat from Monday, said the cooperative body that manages the popular dairy brand.
"The (Amul) milk prices will be up by Rs 2 per litre across all variants from the first week of July. It is the first price hike this year and it is coming after a gap of nine months," R S Sodhi, Managing Director of Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), had said earlier.
"The input costs have gone up in the last nine months and dairy farmers should get better remuneration for their produce. That's why we are hiking the prices," he said.
Prices of Amul brands like Gold, Shakti, Taaza, Slim and Trim, Cow and Tea Special, amongst others, will go up by by Rs 2 a litre from July in Saurashtra and Ahmedabad where GCMMF does the marketing itself, Federation source said.
Later, other member-unions on the board of GCMMF will hike the milk prices in their respective districts, they said.
GCMMF had last raised the milk prices in October 2012, citing higher input cost, especially of transportation.
Amul is a Rs 13,735-crore brand and the Federation handles around 160 lakh litres of milk per day.
