Mumbai: Part of bridge collapses at Andheri station, five injured
A portion of a foot overbridge at Mumbai's Andheri station collapsed on Tuesday morning. The bridge connecting Andheri West to Andheri east crumbled down on the railway tracks, according to news agency PTI.
Four fire brigade vehicles rushed to the spot to clear the debris. At least five people were injured in the bridge collapse and Mumbai fire brigade officials were checking if more people were trapped under the debris.
"It's part of Gokhale Bridge that connects Andheri east and Andheri west. We are at the spot and trying to check with the locals if someone is missing as they might be trapped under the debris,†a fire brigade official said.
All local train services between Andheri railway station & Bandra railway station at Harbour line were affected due to the bridge collapse. However, the train services between Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CSMT) and Bandra railway station were normal.
Union Railway Minister Piyush Goyal ordered an inquiry by Commissioner of Rail Safety and directed officials to rapidly restore the traffic.Â
"Part of Road Over Bridge has fallen on tracks near Andheri Station impacting rail traffic. Directed officials to speed up repair work & rapidly restore traffic in close coordination with other depts. I've ordered an inquiry by Commissioner of Rail Safety," Goyal said.
National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team also reached the spot to carry out rescue operations. The city has been receiving heavy downpour for the last couple of days.
