The Indian meteorological department has on Wednesday predcited “extremely heavy rainfall” on Thursday in Mumbai and adjoining Raigad district. Several areas in Mumbai including suburbs, Navi Mumbai, Thane received heavy rainfall on Wednesday night. A red rain alert has been issued by the weather department, indicating “extremely heavy rainfall” in parts of Mumbai and Raigad districts.
As a precautionary measure, state education minister Asish Shelar announced that all the schools and junior colleges in Mumbai, Thane, Konkan region will remain closed on 19 Sep 2019.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) in a tweet urged the Mumbaikars to avoid venturing around the sea and into water logged areas.
Mumbai is likely to receive a precipitation of more than 204 mm in 24 hours which starts from Thursday morning, an IMD official said.
Along with Mumbai, the IMD forecasts indicate that isolated places over Vidarbha, Konkan, Goa, Telangana, Interior Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal are likely to receive heavy rainfall throughout the day.
