Earthquake hits Chhattisgarh, tremors felt in several cities
Earthquake tremors were felt around 1 pm at Marwahi, Kotmi, Pasan and Pendra areas of Chattisgarh on Thursday. People were seen running on to the streets as shocks were felt for almost 10 seconds.
On Wednesday, three successive earthquakes of magnitude 2.9, 2.9, and 3.1 hit Maharashtra's Palghar district at 10:14 am, 1:24 pm, and 1:28 pm, respectively, the latest in a string of such incidents since November last year. There were no reports of any casualty or damage to property, the official at the district disaster cell said. The earthquakes came after tremors measuring 4 on the Richter Scale were felt across Delhi-NCR and other parts of North India at 7.59 am on Wednesday. The epicenter of the earthquake was reported to be Baghpat in Uttar Pradesh. No damage to life or property was reported.
Earlier in the day, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported the epicentre of the earthquake was 4 km off Kofarnihon in Tajikistan. The depth of the quake is said to be 10 km, as per USGS reports. Unconfirmed reports say that tremors were felt as far as Maharashtra coastline.
A 5.6 magnitude earthquake also hit Indonesia on Wednesday. The epicentre was 131 km West of Kota Ternate, Indonesia and the depth was recorded at 36.4 km.
On February 13, tremors measuring 3.1 on the Richter scale again shook some parts of Palghar district. The tremors were felt around 10.44 am in an area of 10 km near Dhundalwadi village which has a population of nearly 3,000 people.
On February 8, a powerful 5.6 magnitude earthquake jolted Delhi-NCR, parts of north India and Jammu and Kashmir.
An earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter Scale had hit Jammu and Kashmir on Monday morning, according to the ANI. Light tremors were also reported from the adjacent areas. However, no casualty or damage to property was reported. On February 12, an earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter Scale hit the Bay of Bengal, according to the US Geological Survey. Light tremors were also felt in Chennai where people took to social media to report the quake. However, no casualty or damage to property was reported.
