In Kerala the first day of Malyalam month is known as Vishu. People of Kerala welcome the new year with vishu festival.The vishu festival signifies the sun’s transit into the Meda Raasi (first solar month). First solar month mostly falls in the middle of April in the Gregorian calendar and this year, it is on April 14.Â
Keralites are all set to celebrate the Hindu new year, on Friday. While it is known as Vishu in Kerala, the festival is celebrated as Puthandu in Tamil Nadu, Bihu in Assam, Baisakhi in Punjab and Pahela Baishakh or Poila Baishakh in West Bengal.Â
The festival is observed in the early hours of the day. Keralites begins their day with Vishukkani (First thing that they seen in the morning). The arrangements of Vishukkani  is done using rice, lemon, coconut, jackfruit, cucumber etc.On the ocassion Vishukkani Food is a special attraction with Sadya — a mix of salty, sweet, sour and bitter items.Â
Vishu kaineetam is the hansel given to children by elders and is an important ritual during Vishu festival.
Also on the occasion of Vishu PM Narendra Modi took to twitter to greet people.
