The world of cinema showers tribute to late legendary actress Meena Kumari, popularly known as ‘Tragedy Queen’ on her 85th birthday. The actress was one of the finest actresses of all-time and was considered as female Guru Dutt in the Indian film industry. Her larger than life image may seemed colourful from outside but it was full of ups and downs. On the occasion of her birth anniversary, let us take a look at some of the interesting and lesser known facts about the actress' life.
Her real name was Mahjabeen Bano and was daughter of Master Ali Bux who was a Muslim and Iqbal Begum, a Bengali Christian. Her first screen name was Baby Meena.
She made her Bollywood debut with Leatherface at just a tender age of four years in order to support her family.
It is said that she had an obsession with white color. In her biography, Vinod Mehta has stated that she used to wear mostly white color sarees during public appearances. In fact, she used to have majorly white colored objects in her house.
Meena Kumari was a regular face of Hindu mythological shows and used to play role of Hindu goddesses before entering the world of cinema.
The veteran actress is the only actress in Indian cinema to have received three Filmfare nomination for the Best Actress in the year 1962.
