Halima Aden Muslim model who made history as first woman to pose in BURKINI
Halima Aden, a 21-year-old Somali-American born in a refugee camp in Kenya made history by becoming the first woman to pose in Burkini for Sports Illustrated's iconic Swimsuit Issue. Sports Illustrated announced on Monday that Halima is the newest member of its 2019 novice class while sharing some of the model's gorgeous shoot to be featured in the upcoming issue of May.
Aden grew up in a refugee camp in northeastern Kenya with her family which led her to become a humanitarian after experiencing “poverty firsthand.â€
A model with a lot of ‘firsts’, Vogue also reported that Aden was the first Muslim homecoming queen in her high school.
The success Halima Aden is having as a hijab-wearing fashion model has made her into a role model for young Muslim girls encouraging them to embrace their culture and identity.
Prior to the first burkini shoot, Aden also was the first woman to walk a Yeezy show in a hijab.
In 2016, she also became the first to rock a burkini at the Miss Minnesota USA pageant.
