Eid al Adha celebrations across India Know how the festival is celebrated
Several Muslims offered prayers at India’s biggest mosque Jama Masjid in New Delhi to celebrate Eid al-Adha, one of the two most important festivals in the faith’s calendar. Eid al-Adha is observed during the 12th month of the Islamic calendar. This year the date for Eid al-Adha is September 1 and September 2. The prayers were also offered at various mosques across Lucknow, Nagpur, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Moradabad and Ahmedabad.
The holy day is also known as the Feast of Sacrifice and symbolises Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice his son’s life as a testament to the strength of his faith.
The festival, also known as the ‘sacrifice feast’ or Badi Eid, begins on the 10th day of the holiest month of the Islamic lunar calendar.
The dates may vary in different part of the globe and is only confirmed by the sighting of the new crescent moon. Muslim community celebrates this festival in the memory of Abraham’s sacrifice to God and in most parts of the world Muslims sacrifice livestock such as cows, sheep, Camel or goat.
People use to purchase livestock from the market and offer its sacrifice after which the food is distributed.
