During 1998-1999, Pakistan sent several soldiers in militant disguise. The aim of these specially trained troops was to capture key posts and severe the link between India and Ladakh, which will force India to withdraw from Siachen glacier and eventually negotiate Kashmir dispute.
Kargil Vijay Diwas, the day when entire nation commemorates the sacrifices of Indian heroes during 1999 Kargil war. An armed conflict that took place between May and July 1999, was fought between India and Pakistan in the Kargil district of Kashmir and elsewhere along the Line of Control (LOC). Finally on 26 July, 1999, India successfully took command of the high outposts which had been lost to Pakistani intruders. But why was this war fought in the first place?
India launched 'Operation Vijay' to clear the Kargil sector of infiltration by Pakistani soldiers and Kashmiri militants on the Indian side of the Line of Control, which serves as the de facto border between the two states.
The 60 day long war incurred loss of lives on both sides and resulted in India gaining the reign over the Kargil sector.
India lost more than 500 military men on the Kargil territory while reports from Pakistan claimed that more than 3000 of their soldiers, mujahideens and infiltrates died.
Kargil Vijay Diwas is celebrated in the Kargil - Dras sector and the national capital New Delhi, where the Prime Minister of India, pays homage to the soldiers at Amar Jawan Jyoti at India Gate every year.
