Jawaharlal Nehru death anniversary: Congress leaders pay tribute to country's first Prime Minister
Senior Congress leaders on Monday paid tribute to country's first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru at Shanti Van. Among those present were Congress president Rahul Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi, Manmohan Singh, Motilal Vohra and former Vice President Hamid Ansari. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also paid tributes to Jawaharlal Nehru on his death anniversary. In a tweet, PM Modi wrote, “Tributes to Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Ji on his death anniversary. We remember his contributions to our nation.†The Congress under his leadership dominated national and state-level politics and won consecutive elections in 1951, 1957, and 1962.
During India’s struggle for freedom from the British, Pandit Nehru was imprisoned 9 times.
It was during his imprisonment in the mid 1930’s that Pandit Nehru penned his autobiography, “Toward Freedomâ€.
Pandit Nehru introduced Article 44 to the constitution which sought to establish India’s status as a ‘secular state’.
Nehru was nominated a total of 11 times for the Nobel Peace Prize between 1950 to 1955
