Partial Solar eclipse today; few things to keep in mind
Sky watchers in India will be able to see sun in a crescent shape on August 12 during Surya Grahan or partial solar eclipse that begins at 1:32 pm and ends at 5 pm. A part of the Sun will appear to be covered by the Moon’s shadow. This phenomenon called partial solar eclipse, will result in the Sun being visible as a disk with a hollow centre. Partial solar eclipse is expected to play out over northern Canada, north-eastern US, Greenland, Scandinavia, most of Siberia, and some parts of central Asia according to NASA’S Goddard Space Flight Centre.
While total solar eclipse is a rare historical phenomenon, partial solar eclipses occur every six months or so.
Few things to keep in mind before going to see partial solar eclipse:
- Do not look into the sun with naked eyes, it can permanently damage the retina.
- Do not use binoculars for watching the sun, even that can be hazardous.
- Do not use sunglasses to watch the sun. It can cause a permanent eye damage.
