The emergency is one of the most controversial periods of independent India's history. Indira Gandhi government imposed national emergency 44 years ago on the intervening night of June 25-26 in 1975, citing civil and political unrest at the time as the reasons. There was a clampdown on the media and activists were arrested. From Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Rajnath Singh, several politicians are tweeting about 44th anniversary of Emergency.
