Celebrations for Ganesh Chaturthi, also known as the Vinayaka Chaturthi festival, began on Monday across India, and especially in Maharashtra. India's financial capital Mumbai painted itself in festive colours as celebrations dedicated to elephant headed Lord Ganesh. This year's Ganesh Chaturthi marks the 126th celebration of the festival after freedom fighter Lokmanya Bal Gangadharv Tilak called upon people in 1892 to turn the private, household festival into a gala event.
