New Delhi:

India and US together signed an MOU for establishing LIGO (Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory) that will help play a significant role for research purposes on various aspects of gravitational wave astronomy. The construction of third LIGO interferometer, expected to be functional by 2023, will significantly improve the ability of scientists to pinpoint the sources of gravitational waves and analyse the signals.

LIGO is playing a huge role in the discovery of gravitational waves, thereby supporting Einstein’s general theory of relativity. With the signing of the MOU, India will also be able to make big steps in the field of astronomy and space research. India’s LIGO laboratory will have sensitive instruments that can detect movements in space and pinpoint activities that arise from gravitational waves. India’s research-friendly geography will also help it a lot in the space exploration and research for LIGO project. (Also read. The agreement was established during Prime Minister Modi’s visit to US for Nuclear Security Summit (NSS) and also met scientists of LIGO. With India joining hands in the LIGO project is a welcoming sign for the young Indian minds to contribute their bit to the theory.
