Today marks the 75th anniversary of the Quit India movement when Mahatma Gandhi launched it for freedom from British rule in Mumbai.

On 8 August 1942, the Quit India Movement or Bharat Chhodo Andolan or India August Movement launched. Its main aim was to British government to the negotiating table through determined resistance.

On this day, Quit India Resolution was passed at the Bombay session of the All India Congress Committee (AICC).

Chandra Shekhar Azad, an Indian revolutionary joined the freedom struggle at the tender age of 15. Better known as Azad (Free) he was the chief strategist of the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association (HSRA).

Azad was born on 23rd July 1906 in Badarka village of Unnao district in Uttar Pradesh.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will also visit Chandrashekhar Azad's birthplace at Bhabra village in Madhya Pradesh to launch this year's Independence Day celebrations.

Modi’s visit also marks the start of the celebrations of  '70 Saal Azaadi, Yaad Karo Kurbani', a 15-day campaign to commemorate India's struggle for freedom from colonial rule.

Here are some of the interesting facts about Chandra Shekhar Azad

#He was most famous for the Kakori Rail Dacoity in 1925 and assassination of assistant superintendent of police John Poyantz Saunders in 1928.

#He was lovingly called ‘Quick-silver’ for his restless enthusiasm.

#Azad took a vow that he would never be arrested by the British police and kept his promise by shooting himself in the head with his last bullet.

#Alfred Park, where Azad became a martyr is named after him.

#His favourite verse was: Dushman ki goliyon ka hum samna karenge, Azad hi rahein hain, azad hi rahenge!
