Bob Dylan has been awarded the 2016 Nobel Prize for Literature on Thursday. He received the prize “for having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition”.

The 75-year-old rock legend was born on May 24, 1941 in US.

He began his musical career in 1959, playing in coffee houses in Minnesota. He has also received numerous awards including eleven Grammy Awards, a Golden Globe Award, and an Academy Award.

Songs like Blowin’ in the Wind, Like A Rolling Stone and The Times They are A-Changin’ became anthems.

Dylan has amplified and personalized musical genres. His recording career, spanning more than 50 years, has explored the traditions in American song from folk, blues, and country to gospel, rock and roll, and rockabilly to English, Scottish, and Irish folk music, embracing even jazz and the Great American Songbook.

His move away from traditional folk songwriting, paired with a controversial decision to “go electric” proved equally influential.
