How to keep away from the 'silent killer' hypertension

New Delhi:

Hypertension is a common problem in which the arteries experience continuous increase in the blood pressure. The problem is commonly called as high blood pressure.

High blood pressure is termed as 'silent killer'. This is because the condition normally has no symptoms until it has damaged the heart.

A normal blood pressure reading is 120/80 mm Hg. A person having a consistent blood pressure of 140/90 mm Hg is said to be suffering from hypertension. Approximately 20-40% urban adults in india are said to suffer from hypertension and among rural adults the percentage is around 12-17%.

Experts have already given a warning that hypertension will likely end up being an epidemic in future if there is no control over it. High blood pressure for a long time can also increase the risk of coronary artery disease, stroke, heart failure, peripheral vascular disease, vision loss and chronic kidney disease.

But you can control high blood pressure by following some simple steps. A healthy diet is always helpful. Taking a healthy diet, regular physical activity, maintaining a healthy weight, not smoking, taking alcohol in moderation, can keep you away from the risk of high blood pressure as well as heart disease.
