In the worst rail accident in recent years, over 140 passengers were killed and over 100 injured, when 14 coaches of the Indore-Patna Express derailed near Pukhrayan in Kanpur rural district early on Sunday due to suspected rail fracture.

The accident took place near Pukharayan (Kanpur) at 3:00 am on Sunday.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the tragic incident and said that he is anguished beyond words on loss of lives due to derailment of Patna-Indore express.

Describing the accident as “unfortunate”, Modi asked railway officials to ensure fool-proof system in train operation to achieve zero-accident target.
