Pema Khandu will be sworn-in as the Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh for the second term on May 29, tweeted BJP leader Kiren Rijiju. The term of the outgoing assembly ends on June 1.

“I extend my gratitude to all the elected BJP MLAs of Arunachal Pradesh for unanimously selecting Pema Khandu ji as the leader of BJP Legislature Party. Hearty congratulations to @PemaKhanduBJP ji who will be sworn-in as the Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh on 29th May 2019,” Rijiju tweeted.

Assembly polls in the state were held along with Lok Sabha polls and counting of votes held on May 23.

Earlier on Sunday, the cabinet of the Pema Khandu-led BJP government met for the last time on Sunday and recommended the assembly's dissolution.

The BJP has emerged as the single largest party in Arunachal Pradesh by winning 41 of the total 60 seats in the House.

Khandu has won from the Mukto assembly constituency for the third consecutive time. He defeated his lone rival Thupten Kunphen of the Congress by a margin of 2,602 votes. Khandu won the seat in 2011 bye-election and was re-elected unopposed in 2014.

His political journey began after his father and former chief minister Dorjee Khandu died in a helicopter crash near Luguthang in Tawang district in April 2011.

While Janata Dal-United (JDU) made its debut in the state with seven seats, the opposition Congress has won four. Independent candidates have won two seats, the NPP won 5 and the PPA got one seat.
