The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has alleged that 'goons' from Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) attacked its Model Town candidate and sitting MLA Akhilesh Pati Tripathi hours before voting in the Delhi assembly elections. The polling for the 70-member Delhi Assembly got underway on Saturday morning, an election that saw the ruling AAP, opposition BJP and the Congress engaged in a bitterly fought high-octane campaign.

"Model Town MLA Akhilesh Pati Tripathi was attacked by BJP goons. Police is not taking any action. EC should take action against these goons," AAP leader Sanjay Singh tweeted late night on Friday.

Akhilesh Pati Tripathi is up against BJP candidate Kapil Mishra from the Model Town seat. Kapil Mishra was a former member of AAP who joined the BJP last year.

Meanwhile, Kapil Mishra hit back at AAP's allegations saying Akhilesh Pati Tripathi was drunk and hit a poor kid. He also alleged that 'goons' with Tripathi also pelted stones and resorted to aerial firing after people stopped them.

Over 1.47 crore people are eligible to exercise their franchise in the polls that will decide the fate of 672 candidates. There are over 81 lakh male voters, 66.80 lakh female voters, and 869 third-gender voters, Delhi Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Ranbir Singh has said. Around 2.33 lakh voters are in the age group of 18-19, 2.04 lakh voters are senior citizens aged 80, while there are 11,608 service voters, according to officials.
