Wrestler Babita Phogat has joined the Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) days ahead of state assembly elections. Speculations are rife that Babita may contest in the upcoming Haryana polls on a BJP ticket. Babita's resignation from her post as Inspector in Haryana police has been accepted. She had resigned on 13th August this year.
"I had joined the party, you can only join the party after submitting resignation else it would have been conflict of interest. I had submitted my resignation in August," Babita told ANI on Thursday.

Babita Phogat and her father Mahavir Phogat had joined the BJP on August 12. They joined the party in the presence of Union Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju. Babita Phogat had come out in support of Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar after he courted controversy with his remarks on Kashmiri girls. The wrestler had backed him saying there was "nothing offensive" in what he said.
According to reports, Babita is expected to contest Haryana assembly elections from either Barda or Charkhi Dadri seat. Babita is a residents of Balali village near Bhiwani in Haryana. The Phogat family has produced many wrestlters who have won accolades for India at various levels. Babita, her sister Geeta and their father Mahavir Phogat gained national fame after their life inspired the Aamir Khan starrer 'Dangal'.
