Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar's 'dead rat' remark over Congress chief Sonia Gandhi's return as the president of the grand old party has sparked a controversy. Khattar is now facing the wrath of the opposition leaders  who said that the remarks showed 'the anti-women character' of the Bharatiya Janata Party and demanded his 'unconditional apology.'

"After Lok Sabha defeat, we thought Congress is moving away from nepotism ... But they spent three months moving around the country in search of a new party president. After three months, they made Sonia Gandhi a new president. It was like 'Khoda Pahar Nikli Chuiya, Vo Bhi Mari Hui' (like digging up a mountain to find a mouse, that too a dead one). This is their condition," Manohar Lal Khattar had said.

The Congress has demanded an apology from the Chief Minister.

"Haryana CM ML Khattar should give an unconditional apology to Honble Smt . Sonia Gandhi ji .The BJP and its leaders have time and again disrespected women of this country by making derogatory and shameful remarks. This will not be tolerated," tweeted a Congress leader.

Earlier, Khattar had accused the Congress of sympathising with terrorists and said its party president "shed tears for militants". Playing the nationalism card, Khattar launched a fierce attack at a poll rally on opposition Congress over Article 370, asking how could "sympathisers of terrorists support its abrogation".

He said Congress leaders like Bhupinder Singh Hooda, who supported the Union government's move on Article 370, were unable to get the party support.

"Why? Because they (Congress leaders) always shed tears when a terrorist gets killed. Sonia Gandhi cries seeing his body. Such is their character," said Khattar.
