The Congress on Wednesday announced the names of all its candidates who will contest for the upcoming Mizoram Assembly elections, where Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla will contest from two constituencies, sources said.
According to party sources, the Congress under the leadership of Lal Thanhawla is contesting on all the 40 seats in the ensuing elections to be held on November 28.
The Central Election Committee (CEC) of the Congress selected the candidates and the party’s general secretary in-charge of the CEC, Mukul Wasnik, made the announcement, said an official.
CM Thanhawla, who is hopeful of retaining power for the third consecutive term, is contesting from the Champhai South (ST) and Serchhip (ST) seats—both reserved for the Scheduled Tribe (ST) category. In 2013 polls, Thanhawla won from two constituencies, both from Serchhip district.
At present, Mizoram is the only Congress-ruled state in the Northeast region. To retain its power under the incumbent leadership of Thanhawla, the Congress will fight it out with regional parties, including Mizo National Front (MNF) and the Mizo Peoples Conference (MPC).
Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) may also pose a strong challenge to the Congress as the latter is seeking to oust the former from Mizoram.
The nomination-filing process will start on November 2 in the north-eastern state and the last date for filing papers is November 9.
The 40-member Mizoram Assembly will go to the polls on November 28 and the results will be announced on December 11.
