New Delhi:

NOWLAB and 3D printer manufacturer, BigRep have jointly introduced the world’s first fully 3D printed electric motorcycle ‘NERA’, demonstrating the production capabilities of 3D printing (additive manufacturing technology).

The futuristic motorcycle with its stunning feat of design and engineering melded together, the Nera E-bike showcased as to how far the innovative method can go in motorcycle manufacturing industry and automotive industry in general.

Apart from the electronics and the rider, every ounce of the BigRep Nera, including the handlebars, rims, frame, seat, suspension and even the tires are 3D printed.

"The NERA combines several innovations developed by NOWLAB, such as the airless tyre, functional integration and embedded sensor technology," Co-Founder and Managing Director of NOWLAB Daniel Buning said.

"This bike and our other prototypes push the limits of engineering creativity and will reshape AM technology as we know it,” said Buning.

The airless 3D printed tyres are designed with a custom tread and unique matrix construction to make them road-friendly and gives it both strength and flexibility, sources said.

This ‘New Era’ motorbike was developed by using only 15 different parts 3D printed and the total weight is only 132 pounds, making it almost 50 pounds lighter than a Honda Metropolitan scooter, it said.
