Indian auto-maker Mahindra & Mahindra on Thursday launched its sub-4 meter sports utility vehicle XUV300 in petrol and diesel engines, with price starting at Rs 7.90 lakh and Rs 8.49 lakh respectively.

Mahindra XUV300 comes in two engine variants, both petrol and diesel. In the petrol engine variant, it comes with a 1.2-litre which can produce 121 PS of power and 200 Nm of torque while the diesel engine comes with a 1.5-litre engine which produces 300 Nm of torque. It is mated with a 6-speed transmission.

The company is expecting the new SUV to clock higher volumes that the XUV500 when launched in 2011, Mahindra Group chairman Anand Mahindra said at the launch.

The sub-4 meter segment already has the likes of the EcoSport from Ford, Vitara Brezza from Maruti Suzuki and the Nexon from Tata Motors.

This is the third launch from the city-based auto major, after rolling out SUV Alturas G4 and MPV Marazzo. The XUV brand when launched in 2011 was an inflection moment in our automotive journey. Today, as we launch the XUV300, we take the aspirational levels higher. Based on the X100 platform of SsangYong, the XUV300 is a true blue global product which combines Korean technology with Indian innovation and finesse,” Mahindra said.

He sounded confident that the new vehicles will “ignite” the domestic passenger vehicle segment, which saw the sales declining for the third consecutive month to 1.87 percent in January. “We certainly know the XUV300 has the potential to ignite the market,” Mahindra said.

Attributing the slowdown in the automotive industry, particularly in the PV segment to sentiment, he said, “It is not that the customers don’t have the money. Slowdown has occurred due to sentiment for a variety of reasons.”

The cabin of Mahindra XUV300 gets an off-white and black colour combination along with a 7-inch infotainment system with phone connectivity, smartwatch connectivity, push-button start, first in segment Smart Steering System, steering mounting controls, auto dimming IRVM, heated ORVMs and much more. It also gets dual airbags as standard, four power windows and other class-defining premium interior features.

“As customers grew more effluent their desire was for one more segment above than slightly larger car and better driving experience. We think we are having this sweet spot,” he said. “The XUV300 is our latest offering, built on a global platform, in the next generation of aspirational Mahindra vehicles, after the Marazzo and the Alturas G4,” said Pawan Goenka, managing director, M&M Ltd.

Mahindra XUV300 also includes first-in-segment dual zone Fully Automatic Climate Control and Front Parking Sensors, dual LED daytime running lamps, and premium interior for the top-end model. Mahindra XUV300 will be offered in six colour options including Red Rage, Sun Burst Orange, Pearl White, Napoli Black, DSAT Silver and Aquamarine.

“So its is natural that this product (XUV300) will have the higher volume than Marazzo because the segment size is much higher,” he said. The company had earlier said it was expecting to clock 9,000 units per months from the three new launches, including the Marazzo and Alturas G4.

The company said it is well on way to clock 9,000 units from the launch of three products. “Marazzo still has wait list after four months of the launch, Alturas has more than 1.000 bookings, and we expect a very positive response from XUV300 as well,” Goenka said.
