With the launch of Hector SUV, MG Motor market its debut in the Indian market with a bang. MG Hector is one of the first connected SUVs to be launched in India. MG Hector has been among the top-selling SUVs. In March 2020, MG Motor India managed to sell only 1,518 units. These include 116 units of the MG ZS EV and 1,402 units of the MG Hector. In comparison, the automaker sold 1,376 units in February 2020 with 158 unit sales for the ZS electric SUV and 1,218 units of the MG Hector.
MG Motor India’s President & Managing Director Rajeev Chaba said, "Both MG Hector and MG ZS EV have made a mark in the Indian car market. Despite supply chain disruption globally, MG Motor continues to serve its customers. In February, our sales were impacted due to the disruption, while the situation improved during March before the lockdown was announced, resulting in the shutting down of our manufacturing plant."
"Our current focus is on the health and well-being of our employees and their families, as well as the society at large. In this pursuit, we have also announced INR 2 crore grant towards procuring gloves, masks, medicines, ventilators, and beds; and are working closely with the local administration in Gurugram and Halol (Vadodara) to support their requirements," he added.
MG Hector
Coming to the specifications and features of Hector SUV, it comes in five colours - glaze red, burgundy red, starry black, aurora silver, and candy white. The length and width of MG Hector are 4,655 mm and 1,835 mm respectively. The height and wheelbase of MG Hector are 1,760 mm and 2,750 mm respectively.
In terms of the engine, MG Hector comes with the option of both, petrol and diesel powertrains. There is a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine good for 141 bhp and 250 Nm of peak torque, with a standard 6-speed manual gearbox. You can have it with a 6-speed DCT (Double Clutch Transmission) also. Then there is a 2.0-litre turbocharged diesel motor producing 168 bhp and 350 Nm of peak torque. It is mated to a 6-speed manual transmission.
The Hector SUV also gets a segment-first 48V Hybrid System with the petrol trim. Boasting of better fuel efficiency and lower emissions, this variant also gets a 6-speed manual gearbox. On the features front, MG Hector SUV comes with the front and rear fog lamps, LED DRLs and tail lamps, dual-tone machined alloys and floating light turn indicators.
There will be a 7-inch coloured MID and a 10.4-inch HD touchscreen AVN system. It also features the next-gen iSMART connectivity technology. The SUV further offers a premium cabin equipped with power-adjustable seats, electronic parking brake, a 360-degree camera, and cruise control.
Currently, the prices of the Hector SUV starts at Rs 12.18 lakh (ex-showroom, India) going all the way up to Rs 16.88 lakh (ex-showroom, India). MG Motor India currently has over 150 centres across India, aims to further strengthen its network count to 250 centres by March 2020. With the company gearing up to bring its second offering to the country which is an all-electric SUV the ZS EV, we wait to see how the customers react to the company's strategy.
MG ZS EV
The MG’s compact electric SUV is 4314 mm long, 1809 mm wide while it stands 1620 mm tall. The space between the wheels is 2579 mm. On the design front, MG ZS EV gets an aggressive look and gets decent proportions, sporting a bold diamond finished grille upfront flanked by projector headlamps, swooping bonnet, and a curved roofline. The rear gets LED taillamps below the raked windscreen and the license plate area has been moved down to the bumper. Overall, the SUV looks smart.
Coming to the interior of the MG ZS EV, the cabin is finished in black and there are silver inserts on the dash, door pads and circular air-con vents on both ends. The SUV boasts of an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a flat-bottomed steering wheel, USB mobile charging function at the front and rear, Bluetooth functionality, and rear-view parking camera, among others. Also, there is an Apple Carplay and Android Auto on offer along with a sky sunroof. The MG ZS EV is also equipped with I Smart EV 2.0 connected car technology which makes it a connected car. The MG ZS EV comes with a PM 2.5 air filter which can bring bad air quality level of up to 300 AQI down to regular levels in just 35 mins.
There are 3 drive modes on offer, which are Sport, Normal and Eco. It can be selected via the toggle switches right above the rotary transmission knob. MG ZS EV is powered by a synchronous motor that belts out 140.7 bhp and 353 Nm of peak torque. The compact electric SUV comes with a 44.5 kWh battery pack that promises a range of 300 km on a single charge. According to the automaker, the lithium-ion unit can be charged up to 80 per cent in 40 minutes with a 50 kW DC charger, or takes up to seven hours with a standard 7.4 kW charger.

For starters, all ZS EV cars come with an onboard cable to charge at any 15amp socket. MG has further installed an AC fast charger at home/office of the customers. The carmaker is also setting up a DC Super-Fast charging network at select MG showrooms that can be availed round the clock.
