Volvo India has brought an end of the road for two of its oldest line-ups in the country. It is to be noted that the Volvo V40 hatchback and the S60 sedan have been discontinued in India. The Volvo S60 is still listed on Volvo’s India website, as some dealers still have the sedan in stock. In the meantime, the Volvo V40 along with the V40 Cross Country and S60 Cross Country has been taken off from the list.

Both, the V40 and S60, had reached the end of their life-cycle. The second generation the V40 was on sale in India in the Cross Country appearance since 2013 and the second generation S60 has been on sale in India since 2011. The V40 was last updated in 2016 while the S60 sedan received its last major update in 2014.

The two vehicles were based on the Ford platforms and not on the company’s more advanced CMA and SPA platforms which are currently being used in other Volvo cars.

Volvo India’s product portfolio now includes five models i.e. S90, V90 Cross Country, XC40, XC60 and XC90. All five variants were locally assembled at company’s facility in Bengaluru. Also, the Volvo is contemplating local assembly for the third-generation Volvo S60, right from the time of its India launch in 2020. Importantly, the locally assembled models account for 60 percent of Volvo’s total sales in India.

According to a report by Autocar, the V40 is likely to be phased out worldwide by the end of this year. Autocar UK reports that taking the V40’s position in the range will be a small SUV-coupe that’s likely to debut in the next three years with a range of petrol, hybrid and full-electric powertrain options. However, the Volvo is likely to introduce an all-new S60.

Volvo registered 11% of year-on-year sales where the rest of the industry faced declining overall sales in 2019.

In India, the Volvo S60 starts at a price of Rs 38.50 lakh and goes up to Rs 56.02 lakh (all prices, ex-showroom).
