Aahwahan Foundation

In a country where access to basic education, healthcare, and livelihood remains a distant dream for many, Aahwahan Foundation has steadily emerged as a force for change. Established in 2009 by Braja Kishore Pradhan, also known as the “Green Man of Bangalore”, this Bengaluru-based nonprofit is redefining grassroots development through its multisectoral interventions. Built on the principles of inclusivity, sustainability, and community empowerment, the foundation today operates across Karnataka, Odisha, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Delhi.

What sets Aahwahan Foundation apart is its holistic approach, working across education, healthcare, women’s empowerment, environment, and rural development. Its initiatives aren’t just about outreach; they’re about impact that endures.

Taking Classrooms to Communities

Aahwahan Foundation’s flagship initiative, “Education on Wheels,” takes learning directly to the doorsteps of underserved communities. Through mobile classrooms equipped with digital resources, the foundation provides structured education to children in remote and urban slum areas, particularly in Karnataka and Odisha.

When the pandemic shut down schools, Aahwahan Foundation quickly pivoted with its “Online Education Campaign.” The initiative provided smartphones, internet access, and digital training to thousands of government school students, ensuring learning didn’t stop. More than 3,000 students benefited from this swift response.

To tackle the digital divide further, the “Laptop Bank Program” was launched. Under this scheme, high school students from low income households borrow laptops free of cost for up to three years, enabling them to attend online classes and complete assignments.

Healthcare That Reaches the Last Mile

In areas where medical care is scarce or non-existent, Aahwahan Foundation’s “Health on Wheels” program delivers essential healthcare through mobile medical units. Staffed with doctors and technicians, these vans provide consultations, diagnostics, maternal care, and distribute free medicines. The initiative, operational in several districts, currently serves around 4,000 people every month.

In addition, the foundation organizes regular awareness drives on menstrual hygiene, nutrition, and sanitation. A more recent and targeted effort, the “Cervical Cancer Prevention Drive,” is working to vaccinate 500,000 school-age girls against HPV by 2030. Thousands have already received the vaccine under this campaign, conducted in collaboration with healthcare partners.

Empowering Women Through Skill and Opportunity

From tailoring classes to digital literacy, Aahwahan Foundation is helping women chart their own futures. Programs like “Skill India for Women” and “Saksham Mahila” train women in employable skills while supporting them in forming Self-Help Groups and small enterprises. Access to microfinance is often facilitated to encourage entrepreneurship.

In 2023, the “Digital Saheli Program” was introduced in Bengaluru, focusing on adolescent girls from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. The initiative equips them with life skills and training for jobs in telecom, retail, and customer service sectors poised for growth.

Inclusion for the Differently Abled

In 2024, Aahwahan Foundation launched “Sapno Ki Sawari,” a unique program focused on mobility for persons with locomotor disabilities. By distributing motorized wheelchairs, the initiative opens up new possibilities for education and employment. For many beneficiaries, the wheelchair becomes not just a mobility aid but a symbol of dignity and independence.

Greener Cities, Greener Planet

With environmental concerns becoming more urgent, Aahwahan Foundation has been planting seeds - literally. The “Harit Sankalp” campaign, started in 2020, has planted over 10,000 trees in Bengaluru and nearby areas. Focused on indigenous and medicinal plants, the program also involves schools and local volunteers to promote long-term stewardship.

In 2025, the foundation scaled its efforts globally with “Global Green Action 2025.” On World Environment Day, individuals from the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, and South Africa joined hands to take climate-positive actions, turning a local greening initiative into a global movement.

Building Schools That Inspire

Aahwahan Foundation’s “School Infra Mission 270 Plus” is transforming government school infrastructure in over 270 locations. From building classrooms and labs to upgrading sanitation and digital learning facilities, the foundation is working to ensure schools become spaces of aspiration. In 2024, new science labs funded by CSR partnerships were unveiled in two Bengaluru schools, symbolizing the power of public-private collaboration.

Lighting Up Rural India

In partnership with “Project Chirag,” Aahwahan Foundation has brought solar powered lighting to 28 villages still waiting for grid electricity. By installing solar lamps and charging stations, the foundation is quite literally lighting up lives, enabling children to study after dark and making rural homes safer and more functional.

Looking Ahead

Despite its wide reach, the foundation faces the ongoing challenges of managing operations across diverse geographies, sustaining long-term programs, and navigating shifts in policy and funding. The heavy reliance on CSR support, while enabling large-scale work, also makes the foundation vulnerable to economic cycles.

Still, what remains consistent is Aahwahan’s commitment to long-term, systemic change. Its programs, ranging from Education on Wheels to Sapno Ki Sawari, from Project Chirag to Digital Saheli, are built not just to solve problems, but to restore hope, build dignity, and create opportunity.

Aahwahan Foundation’s journey is proof that when development is driven by empathy and equity, real transformation isn’t just possible, it is inevitable.
