New Delhi:

New Delhi, 30 May, 2024: In a major legal development, a Court in Karnataka has restrained the Basketball Federation of India, the governing body for the sport of Basketball in India, from pursuing any further tenders for the running of a professional league till 10th June 2024 after BFI unilaterally put up a new tender in major newspapers on 27th May 2024, thereby violating the contract with Captains Professional Basketball League (CPBL) a few years ago.

Basketball Federation of India a few years ago awarded the tender to CPBL for hosting Basketball matches across the nation and promoting the sports at the grassroots level which in turn would unearth new talent. On 10th May 2024, INBL Pro was launched with much fanfare in Delhi with several international stars lined up to showcase their skills in an exhibition match.

A day before, on 9th May, BFI, for reasons best known to them approached the Delhi High Court arguing that the CPBL was not authorized to host the exhibition

match despite knowing the fact that it was BFI who awarded the contract to CPBL in the first place through a fair and transparent process. CPBL, though stood its ground and approached the Court. The High Court after reviewing the matter thoroughly passed the judgement stating that CPBL within its right, had the authority to host the exhibition match.

Despite an existing tender awarded to the CPBL, the Basketball Federation of India put up a new tender notice for ‘’technical & financial bid for Engagement of Organizing Partner for the execution of National Star Basketball 3*3 & 5*5 League’’ on 27th May 2024, despite of an existing contract with CPBL which has been awarded the rights for another 5 years. This was a violation of the terms & conditions of the contract which CPBL dutifully persisted with all these years.

After CPBL approached the Court for the violation of the contract, the Court passed an interim order thereby restraining the BFI from opening the bids till 10th June when the case will be presented before the Court for hearing. Surely this is a major boost for CPBL in its legal tussle with the all-powerful BFI.

The immense success of the Indian Premier League in cricket has given way to similar league tournaments for sports across the spectrum and CPBL through INBL PRO League has paved the way for Basketball to thrive in India. INBL PRO has ensured budding talent get a platform besides ensuring the right blend of local and global talent.

CPBL is truly committed to a world-class professional league that catapults the game to the next level. CPBL has envisioned more than 300 crores in investment for the game over the next 5 years
