New Delhi:

After a day of a nationwide strike called by the Rahul Gandhi-led Congress party, fuel price continued to increase on Tuesday as petrol was priced at Rs 80.87/litre and diesel at Rs 72.97/litre in Delhi, increasing by Rs 0.14/litre each. Petrol prices crossed the Rs 90 mark in Parbhani, a small town in Maharashtra, which is reportedly the highest in India. Petrol is priced at Rs 90.02 in Parbhani due to highest transportation cost and local taxes.

Meanwhile in Mumbai, the fuel prices rose to historic high as petrol touched Rs 88.26/litre mark and diesel was being sold at Rs 77.47/litre, increasing by Rs 0.14/litre and Rs 0.15/litre respectively.

In Bengaluru, petrol was priced at Rs 83.51 and diesel at Rs 75.32. In Hyderabad, petrol was at Rs 85.75 and diesel at Rs 79.37. While, in Chennai, petrol cost Rs 84.05 and diesel Rs 77.13. In Kolkata, petrol costs Rs 83.75 and diesel Rs 75.82.

Fuel prices have been on a rise since August 16 and people are witnessing sharp rise almost every day owing to a drop in rupee value against the US dollar and rise in crude oil price.

Among all the metropolitan cities, Delhi has the lowest fuel price due to lower sales tax or Value Added Tax (VAT). Whereas, Telangana and Mumbai have the highest VAT of 39.12 per cent and 26 per cent on petrol and diesel respectively.

There has been a nationwide outrage following the sharp rise in fuel prices and the Congress called for a ‘Bharat Bandh’ on Monday due to the increase in fuel prices and the massive drop in rupee value against the US Dollar. Many are asking the government to put petroleum under Goods and Service Taxes (GST) so that the sharp increase in fuel prices can be controlled.
