New Delhi:

Following the Centre's decision to provide a marginal relief of Rs 2.50 on petrol and diesel prices to consumers, several BJP-ruled states have announced an additional price slash of Rs 2.50 litre on both the fuels.

The states, which are expected to revise the fuel prices by this evening, include Maharashtra, Gujarat, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Tripura, Assam, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir, Uttarakhand, and Uttar Pradesh. The latest cut will make the petrol and diesel prices cheaper by Rs 5 in the six BJP-ruled states.

Announcing the additional relief of Rs 2.5/litre, Mahrashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said, "The Maharashtra government also decided to give additional relief of ₹2.5/litre on petrol to give total benefit of ₹5/litre in the state".

"Reducing prices of diesel is also under consideration of the state govt and soon a decision can be taken on diesel too," the Maharashtra government added.

"Finance Minister has announced Rs 2.5 cuts in petrol and diesel prices, reciprocating positively to FM’s announcement, Govt Of Gujarat has also decided to reduce Rs 2.50 on both petrol and diesel. Thus petrol and diesel will be Rs 5 cheaper in State of Gujarat," Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani tweeted.

Chhattisgarh CM Raman Singh said, "Govt of Chhattisgarh has also decided to reduce Rs 2.50 on both petrol & diesel in the state. Thus petrol and diesel will be Rs 5 cheaper in Chhattisgarh".

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath blamed the rising crude oil prices in the international markets for the rise in fuel prices in India.

While announcing the additional relief of Rs 2.5/litre in Uttar Pradesh, Yogi said the state government will face a loss of Rs 4,000 crore to give the extra benefit to the citizens. The reduction in both the petrol and diesel prices will bring down the rates to Rs 78.21/litre and Rs 70.44/litre respectively in Uttar Pradesh. 

Taking to Twitter, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said, "The Madhya Pradesh government has also decided to give an additional relief of ₹2.5/litre on petrol and diesel to give total benefit of ₹5/litre in the state".

While the above mentioned states have reciprocated positively to Jaitley's appeal, Jharkhand had earlier reduced diesel prices by Rs 2.50, but not of petrol. However, with all the BJP-ruled states slashing the price of both petrol and diesel, CM Raghubar Das later decided to reduce the VAT of petrol too.

On being asked if the Karnataka government will reduce the prices of petrol and diesel in the state, Chief Minister Kumaraswamy said, "We had already cut the price by Rs 2 last month".

The development came on the heels of Finance Minister Arun Jaitley's request to the state governments to match the Modi government's effort by reducing value-added tax or VAT by Rs 2.50 so that the total benefit to citizens is at least Rs 5 a litre.
