Aadhaar challenger R S Sharma reappointed as TRAI chief, first for any telecom regulator

New Delhi:

The government has extended tenure of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) chairman R S Sharma for two years. His earlier tenure was till Thursday (August 9). Now, his term has been extended till September 30, 2020. This is for the first time that tenure of any TRAI chairman has been extended.

Sharma recently hit headlines when he gave his Aadhaar number on Twitter and challenged Aadhaar detractors to harm him. Later, he claimed that he emerged as winner.

“The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved the reappointment of Shri Ram Sewak Sharma, IAS (retd) as Chairperson, TRAI for a further period beyond 10.08.2018 up to 30.09.2020 i.e the date on which he attains the age of 65 years or until further orderd, whichever is earlier,” an official order issued by the Personnel Ministry stated.
