Sensex and Nifty on Tuesday hit fresh closing highs on sustained foreign fund inflows coupled with positive domestic cues where Sensex clsoed up by 66.44 points at 39,749.73 while Nifty up by 4 points at 11,928.75. About 633 shares have advanced, 272 shares declined, and 45 shares are unchanged. Emami, HPCL and IOC were losers in early trade.
Yes Bank was the biggest gainer in the Sensex pack, rallying 4.06 per cent. Other gainers were Coal India, Infosys, PowerGrid, Vedanta, Reliance, TCS, HUL, ONGC, HCL Tech, IndusInd Bank, HDFC Bank and Asian Paints, gaining up to 2.72 per cent.
On the other hand, Hero MotoCorp, Bajaj Auto, Bharti Airtel, L&T, Bajaj Finance, M&M, Tata Steel, HDFC, Kotak Bank and ITC were the major laggards, shedding up to 2.55 per cent.
The broader BSE midcap and smallcap indices closed up to 0.41 per cent higher.
Market mood has been euphoric since the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) won the general elections.
Foreign institutional investors bought equity worth Rs 1,215.36 crore on Monday, while domestic institutional investors sold shares to the tune of Rs 327.86 crore, provisional data available with stock exchanges showed.
Meanwhile, the Indian rupee depreciated 20 paise to 69.71 against the US dollar. Brent crude, the global benchmark, was trading 0.33 per cent higher at 69 per barrel. Globally, bourses in Asia ended on a positive note, while those in Europe were trading in the red in their respective early deals.
On Monday, Markets opened on a flat start with Sensex up by 1.36 points at 39436.08, and the Nifty down 4.20 points at 11839.90. However, both Sensex and Nifty ended on a higher note at 39,683 and 11,925 respectively.
At the beginning of morning session, top Sensex gainers include NTPC, Tata Steel, Yes Bank, SBI, PowerGrid, L&T, M&M, ITC, HDFC Bank, Maruti, Axis Bank, Infosys, HDFC twins and ICICI Bank, rising up to 4.53 per cent.
While, Bharti Airtel, Asian Paints, IndusInd Bank, RIL, Tata Motors, ONGC and Sun Pharma fell up to 1.63 per cent. In the previous session on Friday, the Sensex shot up 623.33 points, or 1.61 per cent, to end at 39,434.72, while the broader NSE Nifty surged 187.05 points, or 1.60 per cent, to 11,844.10.
