Following the footprints of Whatsapp, social messaging platform Facebook has also enabled the end-to-end encryption for its Messenger users.
End-to-end encryption in Facebook Messenger now activates the Secret Conversations feature which lets user to keep their chat safe and maintain privacy. Although the feature is not auto applied to every chat, users have to switch on this features from the Messenger settings for individual chats.
Facebook started testing the feauture in August 2015 in test labs and now the feature is ready to use for all of Messenger's 900 million users. But unlike Whatsapp, Messenger's Secret Conversation feature is optional.
Users also get the liablity to set the duration for which they want their secret chat to appear on other friend's device. They can choose from 5 seconds to upto 1 day after which the messsage will automatically disapper. Also the secret message will only be visible on one device at a time.
To use the Secret Conversation feature users have to download the latest version of Facebook Messenger where users will be able to view a new option named 'secret' beside New Message screen. From where they will able to choose their prefrences.The feature will only work when both the users of the messenger have end-to-end encryption switched on and have the latest version of the Messenger app on both the devices. The update is available for both Android and iOS devices.
