The Income Tax department on Monday giving some respite to tax payers has extended the last date of filing Income tax return for the financial year 2016-17 from July 31 to August 5.
Tax payers who could not file their Income tax return for some reasons will now get 5 more days to complete the procedure.
Earlier on Sunday, the I-T department had refused to extend the last date which was July 31.
“The last date for filing of ITRs remains July 31. There are no plans to extend this deadline. The department has already received over 2 crore returns filed electronically. The department requests taxpayers to file their return in time,†an IT department official said on Sunday.
Talking about the reports of some technical glitches being faced by the ITR website, the official said that there are no major glitches that the website ‘incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in’ is facing. However, he added that the website didn’t work for few minutes as maintenance work was going on.
The department has also asked taxpayers to declare cash deposits made in bank accounts aggregating to Rs 2 lakh or more, post demonetisation between November 9 to December 30 last year, in the ITRs. The ITRs to be filed by July 31 pertain to 2016-17 fiscal or assessment year 2017-18.
