Online income tax return has registered an increase by 20 per cent, reports said. The government data reported through sources says estimated that around 2.33 crore people had filed their return until August 1 for the assessment year 2016-2017.
Last year, the total number of people who filed their returns online was 1.92 crore.
According to data from the financial year 2013-14, 3.91 crore people filed tax returns, of which 1.85 crore didn't pay any tax.
Experts believe that the rise in number is the result of the Modi dispensation’s commitment to do away with cash transactions and promotion of online and mobile banking.
The Income Tax department had set the deadline for filing the returns to be July 31. It later extended the deadline to August 5.
