German auto major Volkswagen on Wednesday said it has started production of its upcoming premium SUV Tiguan at the Aurangabad plant in Maharashtra.
The Tiguan which is slated to hit the Indian roads later this year shall be available with a 2 litre diesel engine mated to a 7-speed automatic gearbox.
"The Tiguan will be our premium SUV offering for India and will cater to the unceasing demand in the segment. Our customers will now have an extended portfolio, ranging from hatchback to executive sedan, to meet their requirements at our showrooms," Michael Mayer, Director, Volkswagen Passenger Cars India said in a statement.
The premium SUV along with sedan Passat are the new products lined up for launch by the company this year. VW has already launched performance-oriented hatchback GTI and is seeking to position itself as a full range "accessible premium car brand" in India.
The Tiguan was first showcased at the Auto Expo in 2016. It will compete with the likes of Toyota Fortuner and Ford Endeavour which are priced in the range of Rs 25.92 lakh to up to Rs 31.12 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).
