It seems like the Gujarat government is stepping into the shoes of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. Yes! Hours after UP CM Yogi Adityanath announced the renaming of Faizabad district as Ayodhya on the eve of Diwali, the Gujarat government on Tuesday said it was thinking to rename Ahmedabad as Karnavati. However, the development will come into effect only if there are no legal hurdles.

Speaking to media in Gujarat's Gandhinagar, Deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel said, "Since long, there has been a demand to change the name of Ahmedabad and rename it as Karnavati. If we get people's support for the legal process, we are ready to change its name. People of Ahmedabad like the name Karnavati".

"We can think of changing the name at an appropriate time," he added.

On a related note, Karnavati city was established by Chaulukya ruler Karna of Anhilwara (modern Patan) on the banks of the Sabarmati river after he waged a successful war against the Bhil king of Ashaval.

Ahmedabad, which is India's only city having the 'World Heritage' tag was named after the four saints in the area by the name Ahmed in 1411 A.D. Earlier, the city was known as Ashaval.

In October, the BJP government in Uttar Pradesh had renamed Allahabad as Prayagraj which evoked mixed responses from members of the society, including intellectuals, teachers and the common man across India.
