Tragedy stuck two families in Bengaluru as a teen and her male friend committed suicides after the death of the girl's pet dog on Wednesday. Distraught and shaken over her Pomerian Jimmy's death, Gamini, 19, allegedly hanged herself from the ceiling of her house in Ashwath Nagar.
A few hours later, even her friend and neighbour P Mallesh, committed suicide by jumping in front of a train near Binny Mills. Gamini was a BCom student at the RPA College, Rajajinagar. Her mother Vijayalakshmi is a teacher and father Chikkaswamy a driver.
Vijayalakshmi told police, "Jimmy was with us for over four years and died of illness in July. Gamini changed a lot after Jimmy's death and we did everything we could to make her happy. We even got her another dog last week and named him Jimmy."
However, Gamini was unable to come out of depression and allegedly took the extreme step, she added.
On the other hand, Mallesh's father, Puttiah claimed that he was clueless as to why his son took such an extreme step. No suicide note has been found and police suspect that he took his life as he was upset due to Gamini's death.
