Deputy Mayor of Bengaluru Ramila Umashankar dies of heart attack

Deputy Mayor of Bengaluru, Ramila Umashankar passed away on Thursday night as a result of a massive heart attack on Thursday night. The deputy mayor was new-elected and belonged to the Janata Dal (Secular) party. The 44-year-old was taken to a hospital after she suffered a severe chest pain at about 12.45 am. As per the family sources, she died without responding to treatment. She is survived by her husband D Umashankar and two children.

A holiday was declared in schools and colleges on Friday which were falling under the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) to pay tribute to Deputy Mayor Umashankar.

Elected on September 28, the deputy mayor was also a corporator from Kaveripura ward of Karnataka.

Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy expressed his condolence to Umashankar’s death.

The Chief Minister took to his twitter handle to expressed grief over the sad demise and wrote, “My heartfelt condolences to her family. May her soul rest in peace. Pray the Almighty gives courage and strength to the family to bear this loss. #RameelaUmashankar #RIP.”

HD Kumaraswamy in a statement said, “It is shocking to learn that she is no more with us.” He remembered the deputy mayor as a “dedicated social worker and committed party worker.”
