At least six labourers were killed and five others injured after the wall of an under-construction rice sheller collapsed at Lakhanpur village on Sunday, police said.

Four labourers were killed on the spot while two others succumbed to their injuries later, police said, adding others were taken to Khamano Civil Hospital from where five were referred to a hospital in Chandigarh.

Chief Minister Amarinder Singh expressed grief over the death of the six labourers and announced an ex-gratia of Rs one lakh each for the kin of those killed in the wall collapse.   

Amarinder, while directing the deputy commissioner to ensure that best possible medial aid be given to the injured, said the entire cost of their treatment would be borne by the state government.

An FIR was registered under section 304 (Punishment for culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of the IPC against the owner of the rice sheller.

Amarinder had directed the PWD department to submit a technical report, detailing the reasons behind the wall collapse.
