The controversial triple talaq has struck another conflict, but this time the tables have turned on a husband. A woman in Yamunanagar, Haryana, has used the contentious practice of triple talaq to “divorce” her husband.

Shazia, the resident of Unhedi village and mother of three, allegedly divorced her husband, Abbas, by writing “talaq talaq talaq” on a piece of paper, according to a police statement on Saturday. The woman then eloped with her lover, who also happens to be her nephew, added the police.

The practice of instant talaq is used by some Muslim men to divorce their wives. A benchmark verdict was passed by Supreme Court in 2017, according to which the practice of divorce through triple talaq among Muslims will be considered “void”, “illegal”, and “unconstitutional”.

A bill was later passed by the Lok Sabha which criminalises instant triple talaq. But the Rajya Sabha is yet to take up an amended version of the bill.

Shazia wrote a letter to her husband, saying, “I am divorcing you out of my own free will. I am leaving this house because you tortured me ever since we got married. You would beat me after getting drunk. Hence, I am taking talaq.”

She added that she was not doing it under anybody’s influence.

“Nobody else is responsible,” Shazia wrote.

Police suspect that the woman has eloped with her nephew, who is a bachelor.
