New Delhi:

The Tamil Nadu government’s stand on a plea by Hindu Munnani leader Ramagopalan on installation of Vinayaga idols for Vinayaga Chathurthi is being sought.

Justice R Mahadevan of the Madras High Court on Saturday sought the government’s stand on a bunch of pleas, including one by Hindu Munnani leader Ramagopalan and slated the matter for further hearing on September 4.

Earlier, the government ordered organisers of the Vinayaga Chaturthi function to obtain no-objection certificates (NOCs) from the house owners and local bodies a month before installing the idols on public roads. Also, the NOCs from the police and the Fire and Rescue Services have to be produced for installing the idols.

According to Ramagopalan, the conditions imposed were practically impossible to obtain. He explains that for temporary installation of idols for a period of three to 10 days, it would take a year to get all the requisite permissions from various bodies as stipulated in the government order.

In view of it, the petitioners, including Ramagopalan, sought the court to quash the government order.
