New Delhi:

With the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted heavy rainfall for eight districts of Uttarakhand in the next 48 hours, schools in Dehradun and adjoining areas will be shut on Monday, August 6.

"Heavy rainfall is expected in next 48 hours in Dehradun, Haridwar, Pauri, Tehri, Chamoli and Nainital. All schools from class 1 to 12 in Dehradun will be shut on August 6," the news agency ANI reported.

Though there is no report of any untoward incident due to rain so far, the incessant downpour led to long traffic jams at various points throughout the city.  Waterlogged streets forced commuters to wade or drive through ankle-deep water to return from office.

The State Emergency Operation Centre also issued an advisory, asking authorities not to allow Chardham yatris to go to the higher Himalayan region. Pilgrims should be in continual touch with officials, as the level of rivers is also rising following the continuous rainfall in the city.
