New Delhi:

As many as 33 trees were heavily pruned and five more were cut down in the NCERT campus in Delhi without the forest department's permission, an official said on Thursday. Under the Delhi Preservation of Trees Act, one should take permission from authorities for cutting and pruning of trees.

The forest department said that following the complaint from an NGO, New Delhi Nature Society (NDNS), a team of forest rangers visited the campus on Aurobindo Road on Wednesday. They found that five trees were cut and 33 were heavily pruned.

“A whole row of trees along the fence were heavily pruned and there were eucalyptus and semal trees among the ones that were chopped,” he said.

Several NGOs and civil societies in Delhi have been carrying out a movement against tree cutting in the city following reports of heavy destruction of trees in the city.
