New Delhi:

Additional Sessions Judge Krishan Kant’s wife Ritu, who was allegedly shot in the Arcadia marketplace in Gurugram by a personal security guard named Mahipal, succumbed to injuries, while their 18-year-old son Dhruv has been declared “brain dead”, officials said on Sunday. Kant’s wife and son were admitted to Gurgaon Civil Hospital in critical condition.

Regional Medical Officer of the Gurgaon Civil Hospital, Pawan Choudhary confirmed that the post-mortem examination had been conducted following the demise of Ritu.

“The reason for Ritu’s death was excessive bleeding. A panel of three specialist doctors found two gunshot wounds on the right side and in the middle of the chest,” Chaudhary said.

Meanwhile, Dhruv, who was shot in the head has been declared brain dead and has been put on life support system and only a miracle can save him, the medical officer added.

Mahipal, the personal security guard, has been sent to a four-day police custody by a Gurgaon court.

The Gurgaon Police had asked for a week’s custody for in-depth interrogation to know why Mahipal shot Ritu and Dhruv. It has set up a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to for extensive investigation in the case.

“Mahipal is frequently changing his statements and becomes furious whenever he is questioned. He said he was depressed due to family problems,” said a senior police officer, who is part of the interrogation team.

“As per the statement of the accused, he was not happy with the behaviour of the victim’s family members. He was also upset due to frequent fights with his wife which was confirmed by his neighbours in police lines,” the officer told PTI.

After initial interrogation by the police, it has been established that Mahipal was a Haryana police head constable and was serving as a personal security guard of Additional Sessions Judge Krishan Kant.

Mahipal had been demanding leave to visit his home for quite some time now, however, his leave was not sanctioned, the officer said.

“The judge also used to scold him often,” one of the interrogating officers said.

On Saturday, Ritu scolded him inside the car while they were on their way to the market, the officer said. “He harboured a grudge against the judge.”

Meanwhile, in a statement, Krishan Kant said that after shooting Ritu and Dhruv, Mahipal called him and informed him about the incident.

Earlier, the police had stated that the incident happened around 3.30 pm on Saturday with Ritu suffering a bullet injury in her chest.

In a video footage recorded by a witness, Mahipal is spotted with a gun in his hand and is trying to push Dhurv inside the car.
