Before manufacturing bikes, Royal Enfield might not be barring women or girls from riding it. The company would for sure not be making it a men-exclusive thing. But, in what comes as a blatant disregard for gender-equality, Ritika Mavi, a student of Class XI was targeted for riding a bullet in Milak Khatana village in UP’s Greater Noida. The patriarchal feeling must have surmounted the zeal of two men as they stopped Ritika on August 31 when she was returning to home from a general store on her bike. They must have not liked the ‘temerity’ SHE displayed by riding a BIKE. Although, she is just a beginner now. The act of both the men, Sachin, 30 and Kullu, 28 finally culminated into an argument.
Both of them with their associates reached girl’s home and fired shots in air. They allegedly manhandled Ritika’s father and started threatening the family. The family dialled the police helpline number. The incident was reported to the police and a case was registered against both the accused on September 1 under Section 506, Section 504, Section 323, reports HT.
Panchayat was ultimately convened to ensure peace in Milak Khatana village and it advised the victim’s family to withdraw the case with a promise that goons’ will not trouble the victim’s family in the future. The local police said that they have not been apprised that the panchayat. However, both Sachin and Kullu have been habitual offenders, says police. Ritika’s uncle said that they are ‘going consider panchayat’s advice to withdraw the case’.
